Fortis’ Herzog Named a Titan of Colorado Business

The Titan 100 list, premiering this year, recognizes the state’s top leaders

Fortis Law PartnersJulie Herzog has been named to the Titan 100, a premier group of 100 CEOs and other C-level executives in Colorado. The designation is bestowed upon leaders in both the public and private sectors who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, vision, passion, and influence in their field.

Herzog, a partner in the firm, meets all those criteria. As the head of Fortis’ corporate/securities practice, she has handled more than $4 billion worth of transactions for a diverse set of clients ranging from small startups to Fortune 100 corporations. In the past ten years, she has managed hundreds of transactions valued at over $1.5 billion for clients in a variety of industries, including energy, cannabis, health care, technology, manufacturing, real estate, food and beverage, and business consulting. She has shepherded several hundred companies through the legal complexities of business formation through initial public offerings or acquisitions.

She has earned a reputation for respecting the unique qualities of each of her clients, a particular goal of Fortis. Her approach is refreshingly down-to-earth as she meets her clients’ business objectives while appropriately addressing the legal and business risks. She’s been on both sides of the desk, and so she understands the importance of timeliness, efficiency and other factors that create quality customer service.

“The Titan 100 are shaping the future of Colorado’s business community by building a distinguished reputation that is unrivaled and preeminent in their field.” said Jaime Zawmon, President of Titan CEO. “We proudly recognize the Titan 100 for their successes and contributions. We know that they will have a profound impact that makes an extraordinary difference for their customers and clients across the nation.”

Herzog and the other 99 leaders will be profiled online in Colorado Business Magazine, published in a limited-edition Titan 100 book, and recognized during the Titan 100 awards ceremony on September 10th at “The Vehicle Vault” located in Parker, Colorado.  Throughout the year, the Titans will attend private events and roundtables, enabling them to network and grow their professional connections.  This is the inaugural year for the Titan 100, which is presented by WIPFLi, an accounting and consulting firm with more than 50 offices serving more than 100,000 clients.

Though she’s a team player through and through, Herzog’s entrepreneurial spirit sets her apart. “I’ve been an entrepreneur at heart since I was a pre-teen, when I sold candy in the halls of my junior high school in Oklahoma City,” she said. The same thing that drove me then drives me now as the head of a practice area for a law firm with $3.9 million in annual revenues.”

Encouraged by her father, Herzog earned accounting and political science degrees at Oklahoma State University in 1991. She went on to earn her law degree at Southern Methodist University. While interning for an international law firm, Jones Day, she developed new neighborhood plans for the Dallas region, which helped her hone her natural deal-making skills. Jones Day liked her work so much that they hired her upon her graduation from law school in 1994. There and at subsequent firms, she mastered the nuances of business law, particularly in the area of corporate transactions. “I learned the nuances of both the law and the social psychology that makes these deals happen,” she said. She practiced corporate and securities law for more than eight years at Morrison & Foerster’s Denver and Hong Kong offices and at Jones Day’s Chicago office.

She joined Fortis in 2003. Even as she was masterminding big, complex business deals, she launched, grew and sold a clothing business and launched a company that offered executive retreats. She recently co-founded a sister company to Fortis: Full Velocity Consulting. Herzog has used her deep understanding of workplace dynamics to help working women by creating and implementing flexible, family-oriented work environments that reward colleagues professionally and personally.

As if she weren’t busy enough, Herzog also took the time to earn a black belt in taekwondo, earning it along with her children when they were just 10. “It was a powerful family bonding event for me and my triplets: one son and two daughters, one of whom has special needs,” she said.
